In this analytical essay I have chosen to write about the non-fiction text “I’m more than an ‘other” by Meghan Markle. The article was originally written in July 2017 and was first published in ELLE magazine. Here in this essay I will be focusing on how she engages the reader and the question of identity she raises in the text. Furthermore, I will be reflecting on her take on the general problems ethnic people and mixed-race people face, especially in America, about their identity and their problem with fitting into society’s “boxes”.
The article is written by Meghan Markle and it revolves around her experiences as a mixed-race individual. She writes about how having a Caucasian father and an African American mother caused some problems when growing up. More precisely she was subject to discriminating behavior
These experiences and her view on them are well described in her article where she uses a couple of strategies to boost reader engagement to a better degree. For example, she uses a question in the beginning, to start of the article before she comes with an introduction. This makes the reader more curious and want to know more. Another strategy she makes use of is that she relates her own experiences to issues in the society and hereby create a sort of empathic feeling in the reader. This makes the reader more inclined to support her views and arguments.
