Love and marriage goes together... or do they? When you have been married for a very long time some couples’ love might die out and the everyday life can be a painful hassle. In James Thurber’s short story Mr. Preble Gets Rid of His Wife we meet a couple who have most certainly grown apart, to such an extreme that it leads to homicide.
Mr. Preble and Mrs. Preble can’t stand each other. Their marriage has become a torture for them both. One day Mr. Preble and Mrs. Preble have a conversation in the living room. Mr. Preble tries to lure Mrs. Preble into the cellar. He reveals to her that he wants to kill her. She refuses at first, but finally gives in and goes into the cellar with him. Mrs. Preble can’t stop arguing with Mr. Preble, even on the subject of her own death.
There is a lot of dialogue in the short story, so we know the characters well. There are two important characters in the short story, Mr. Preble and Mrs. Preble. They are the opposite of each other.
Mrs. Preble is a stereotype. She is the same person during the whole short story. She doesn’t change her behavior no matter what happens between them. She has the same attitude even when she is told that her husband wants to kill her. There is a sort of a facade between her emotions and actions. She is a stubborn woman, because she will not get a divorce, although Mr. Preble is cheating on her. She will not let him win.
