Write a summary of “Marriage of Inconvenience” in about 150 words
The short film, Marriage of inconvenience, by Franklin Jin Rho was realised in 2013. It’s about a family of three, father, mother and son. The son hands his mother an envelope with an invitation to his wedding. The picture on the invitation, is the son and his fiancé which is also a man. Since the father is a pastor and is leading a demonstration against gay marriage. The demonstration is going to take place in front of the city hall where his son will be married. The father isn’t aware of his son’s decision to wed another man, and is therefore shocked to see his son and his wife heading towards the city hall. The mother and the couple walks past the father and he are confronting her, but she takes her son’s side. Just before they enter, a newly married gay coupled walks out with a child and she freezes, the son and boyfriend enters.

The conflict in this short film, is that the mother is emotionally torn between her son and her husband, and whether or not she should attend her son’s gay marriage in the city hall. The husband is the pastor and is therefore against gay marriage, and she is his first lady, they have the same faith, but the short film also gives the impression that she is emotionally attached to the husband. Back then you either married out of status or love, and since they are black, they did it out of love. A mother will always love her child, which puts her in the situation where she can’t between her husband and faith or her son.
