“Marriage spoils” is a short story written by Michele Annable. The story unfolds right after the recent divorce between our main character Gib and his wife Jayleigh. Amid the divorce their old house was sold and with it a lot of old stuff was also hauled away. One of the things that was thrown away was their daughters’ doll. Gib decides that he needs to try and find this doll for his daughter and uses a lot of time at the local landfill. After many days without luck Gib finally finds the doll, which is now almost destroyed. When he returns it, his daughter is not satisfied, and he wonders that the next time he sees her she may have other things to worry about.
Analysis:
A divorce is usually very tough for most families and can cause a lot of tension, both between the parents but also between the kids and their parents. Often there is a kind of rally between who gets to have the most rights over the kids and it is this that really hurts the family. When reading “Marriage spoils” by Michele Annable we get some insight as to how the divorce can affect the family life and you can start to question why some people choose to act the way they do when they are under this kind of pressure.
