In the movie we get to know a little boy named Nullah. Nullah is what they call a half-caste or a creamy colored, it means, that his mother is an aborigine, and his father is a white man. Back then white men had affairs with aborigines. Nullahs father do not want to recognize Nullah as his child, and Nullah therefore lives with his mother.
When the policemen come out to their farm, Nullah needs to hide, because otherwise he will be taken and put on the Mission island. The Mission island is the place half-castes were put to outbreed the race. One day Nullah hid in the water tank with his mother, while the cops were there to make sure, there were no half-castes around, but unfortunately the tank got filled with water, and they slipped into it, and his mother died. After she died, they burned her. When an aborigine dies, you aren’t supposed to say his or her name ever again, so they had to move on.
Nullah can't do the same things as white people and aborigines, so he doesn’t leave his home very often. He did it one time, but he dressed up as an aborigine, and smeared mud on his face and body to look darker.
