Abraham Lincoln became the president of the United States in the year of 1861, and served his duty until his assassination in 1865. Abraham Lincoln was the person who led the US into the civil war, which was the war between the Northern part of the United states, (free slave states) and the Southern part (the states who still had slavery).
The reason why the civil war began was because of the slavery in the country. The North was fighting to illegalise slavery and the South was fighting to keep the rights to own slaves. Around 750.000 Americans died during this war, and is known to be the bloodiest war the U.S has ever participated in. The US lost more men in this one war than they lost in all the wars they been in combined. When the war was over in 1865 the North had won and all slaves were now free people, as it was illegal to own slaves.
After the war a group of people formed the group Ku Klux Klan (KKK). The KKK is an organasation against black people and, consisted of people who believed that they should have the right to own slaves.
