The African Americans faced many problems during the recognition of their rights and equal human values. The rights of the Black people were limited after the 13th amendment (1864) was supplied to the constitution and slavery was abolished. The Black people was frowned upon and discriminated, mainly in the Southern states.
The Southern states was the states with the highest racism and discrimination, because of the following reason:
- The civil war (1861-1863) started as a result of a disagreement between the Northern and Southern states. The Northern states wanted to end slavery, but the Southern states was not interested in this objective – mainly because the economy of the Southern states was based upon agriculture and farming, a craftsmanship, where there is need for a lot of manpower, which was provided inexpensively by the African slaves. Where the Northern states’ economy was generally provided by industrial work, for example factories etc.
After the loss of the civil war it led to an irritation with some white people from the Southern states. Some of these people started the Ku Klux Klan, an anti-black people organisation. The KKK did many different things to discriminate and undermine the black people, for example lynching, violent actions, harassment etc.
