The Civil war in the US was a very horrifying war, because over 620.000 Americans died - necessary. The war started in 1861 and lasted for 4 years. The war was all about slavery. When the Constitution of the first democracy in the world was written, slavery was allready a normal thing. Several of the founding fathers, like Jefferson Davis, were slaveowners, even though the Constitution said, that all men are born to be free and equal - but it didn’t include slaves and women.

The South was very acknowledged for its music and litterature, and it was very unique, because of the warm climate and a rich soil. The South wasn’t just an exotic place, but it grew into being an agricultural economy. The crops such as rice, sugar, tobacco and cotton needed a lot of attention, so plantationowners wanted a large and cheap labor force. They needed slaves to work.
In the years between 1620 and 1861, more than 8 million slaves, were brought to the US. Most of them came from West Africa. The slaves worked in plantations for a white man, and they were treated very brutally, and some slaves had chains on their legs.
