'Drive': Analyse af Nicolas Winding Refns film

The movie “Drive” is directed by Nicolas Winding [2011]. The story takes place in Hollywood, in the present. This film starts off with a robbery driving scene. The driver is the main character of the movie and we never get to know the name of this mysterious character.

The driver has multiple jobs. He works as a part-time stuntman, automobile mechanic and as a getaway driver. Later in the movie, the driver falls for his neighbor. The neighbor has a husband that sits in prison and currently she is looking after her child alone. Meanwhile, his garage mechanic boss is trying to set up a race team using gang money. The driver gets into trouble when he helps his neighbor’s husband. The husband is still in trouble from the past. The driver and the husband must do a robbery, at a flower store. The robbery totally fails, and the husband is shot dead. The movie ends with the driver going after the gang that shot the husband. The driver successfully kills the gang but is wounded on the way. The driver calls his neighbor and drive offs.

Short Analytical Essay:

The movie “Drive” is about this mysterious man, let’s just call him “The driver”. The title of the movie gives me, an expression that the movie must have something to do with cars. In the opening scene there’s used a lot of pan camera movement that makes us know who the main character is right from the start. There is used lowkey lightning in the opening scene, so we know its evening or night, because that is where the first robbery takes place. When the robbery is about to happen there is focus on the drivers watch, the driver sets a timer on his watch, the watch is placed on the cars driving wheel, I think the movie is trying to tell us, this is definitely not his first time doing this. I forgot to mention in the start of the movie there is a background track that has the same melody all the way through in this made the opening scene more excited for me. The music stops, when the helicopter (police) know which car the thieves are in. Later in the movie, the driver falls for his neighbor Irene, this happens because of her car engine crashed. Irene have a husband his name is Standard he sits in prison and currently she is looking after her child alone. Meanwhile, his garage mechanic boss Shannon is trying to set up a race team using gang money. Standard comes out of prison and reunite with his family. The driver gets into trouble when he helps Standard. Standard still owes money to the same gang, the same gang Shannon borrowed money from. The driver and Standard have to do a robbery, at a flower store. The robbery totally fails because it was a setup from the gang, and Standard is shot dead. The movie ends with the driver going after the gang that shot the husband. In the final scene the driver successfully kills the last gang member but is wounded on the way. He drives away alone but alone being a hero.
