We see evidence of this numerous times in the text; such as during the conversation between his wife and her mother where they continue to discuss his unhinged behavior as a result of the war. A significant piece would be when the mother mentions the Muriel’s father's recollection from a previous conversation with the physiatrist, which states, "Seymour may completely lose control of himself." The occurrences of blackouts are known to be a widespread occurrence of PTSD, according to Dir. Seahorn. She states that one experiencing PTSD may experience blackouts where their actions could be controlled entirely by the individuals "fight or flight" instinct. We do see Seymour go through this phase when he snaps when the woman may have glanced at his feet in the elevator, which tragically ends in Seymore taking his own life. Salinger shows us this side of Seymour’s struggle to make us aware that the slightest things may set of a person with the disorder. Prior to his black out we see the sweet side of Seymour Salinger does this to show his true innocent side and he follows up what he’s like when he loses control to show us Seymour’s contrasting world.
