Circumstances

At the time of the speech Obama had to prove himself to the voters so that he could win the election. The election was still in the primary phase at the time. At this time the candidates in each party competes to participate in the US presidential election.

The speech also came after some media controversy about how Barack Obama´s ethnicity playing a role in his campaign. “It's a story that hasn't made me the most conventional candidate.” (p.2,l.28) In this quote Obama actually mentions that maybe he is not the most traditional candidate, but he believes that actually the American society is not a lot of different cultures, races and religions, but that America is truly just one.
