The author Katharine Susannah Prichard want to show us how it is to be an half caste, how Mary the main character was taken away from her mother. And the difficulties of being half white and half black. There are a lot of racism towards the half castes and the aboriginal. “She lived on the outskirts of the settlement” (page 12. line 1-2). Mary and her husband lives on the outskirts off a settlement in Australia, that’s were most half casters live. They live there because they do not belong in the settlement, that’s where the white live. They don’t belong anywhere. Mary tries to live like a white woman by “keeping her home clean and tidy and herself respectable, as she had been taught to in a mission school.”(page 12, line 3-4-5) Mary has a job and works at a nearby township. She has built her own life so she does not have to become one of the aboriginals that has a drinking problem. Her husband is one of those.
