We meet a family of 3, mom, dad and their little girl, and the main character. They all live in the same hotel. They first meet for dinner, the main character and the little girl. She tells her a secret, that can not be told. It’s about how dad and the girl, is going to kill the mother. The main character is frightened. They want to make it look like suicide. The main character must do something about this. She tries to help them, by telling. Be she can’t. She tells them, and it all goes terribly wrong for her.

Conflict

It all begins with the main character looking at a family playing in the hotel garden. She realizes they are speaking French, but they are not French, they are more likely to be Americans. “I can hear them speaking French, but I know they are not French. Americans, Bostonians probably” (s. 1 ll 3-4). The conflict starts when she gets introduced to the family’s child Amelia. The child roams around the hotel dining room and greets the hotel guests. it’s now the main character turn for a little chat with her. She starts out be telling the main character that her papa loves to write books. The conversation goes on. Then she stops talking, leaning in close to the main character, and says something dark, a secret, a thing she can’t tell anyone. “I’m going to tell you a really big secret!” Again I am charmed, intrigued. “It’s so important, I want someone to know!” I am silent during the pause. 40 “I hate my Mama. I am going to kill her.”(s 1 ll. 36 – 40) She gets confused and just stares at the little girl, telling her that she just can’t make up stories like that. The main character wants to speak to the little girls’ parents, but all she says is that, it won’t work, and that they don’t care. The little girls insist on that her mother needs to die, and her papa is in on it. He wants to marry a woman who writes books just like he does. “My Papa is going to help me. He hates her too. He wants to marry another lady, one who writes books like he does.”(s. 2 ll 43 – 44) The main character, cant really say anything. Because, if she does, they will think that it’s made up, just because it was a little girl who said it.
