In the short story, “Trio for Four Voices”, from 2018, the author, Jane McLaughlin, describes a conflict between the story’s narrator and a little girl. The narrator is staying at a hotel in a foreign country, where she notices a family. The narrator encounters the daughter of the family, Amelia, who apparently has an intention of killing her mother. Frightened by the potential outcome of Amelia’s admission, the story becomes an endeavor to discouraging Amelia in actualizing her twisted intentions. A few days pass, until the narrator finally consults Amelia’s mother. The family disbelieves and threatens the narrator, until she unwillingly withdraws her statements. It is later revealed that the family deceived the narrator, and the intentions of murder were false. Towards the ending, the family grants the narrator gifts and leaves the hotel.

Analytical Essay

There is sort of a surreal natural human need of disparaging others. It is perhaps for the sake of mere amusement or even perhaps a despotic urgency for total supremacy. But to what extend will humans amuse themselves at the expense of others?

This question is processed through a twisted narrative of deception in Jane McLaughlin’s short story, “Trio for Four Voices”, published in 2018.
