What happens when you feel like you don’t get treated right by your own mother? When she affects a person’s life through favoritism and special treatments for one that should be treated equally with you? What happens? When one child gets favored over another, its usually based on problems among the family situation that can affect the parent’s behavior to their children, whereas sometimes they don’t even notice the numerous construction they have against their child. This is the theme of the story “Streamlining by Muli Amaye. The mother doesn’t think about the consequences for her daughter, by favoring her son in this story.
The story is about two siblings, Jocie and her brother Brandon. Jocie is driving with her brother to their mother’s house in Reddish. In the car ride on their way, Jocie keeps pointing out her frustration over Brandon’s behavior, thinking he is very irresponsible and doesn’t act like a thirty-one-year-old. Jocie believes that her mother favorizes Brandon, and always makes his excuses for why he isn’t the one doing bad things, and making apologies for his behavior, by blaming others. Therefore, Jocie gets blamed for most things, including the fathers depart from the family. She was being anxious about visiting their mother, because of the known favoritism she knows the mother is making, which also happens to be the case when they arrive, because of some fruit dropping out of the shopping bags, and hence she says goodbye to her mother and brother, and after that takes off.
