The Outsiders written by S.E. Hinton is about two weeks in the life of 14-year-old Ponyboy Curtis. Ponyboy Curtis lives with his two brothers Darry and Soda because his parents died in a car accident. The boys are greasers, that refers to the young men on the East Side, the poor side of town. The greasers' rivals are the Socs, short for Socials, who are the "West-side rich kids."
Plot: Ponyboy and his buddy Johnny Cade, stay out late. When Ponyboy comes home his brother Darry is very angry with Ponyboy and slaps him. Ponyboy gets scared and runs back to Johnny telling him that he doesn’t want to be near his family. The two friends run away, afterwards, they bump into some socs. The socs are very drunk and start to jump the boys. A guy named Bob grabs Ponyboy and throws him in a fountain and holds his head underwater. Johnny gets nervous and pulls out his switchblade and threatens to cut him and ends up cutting Bob in the stomach. Ponyboy gets out of the water and sees Bob lying dead on the ground. They decide to run away so that they don’t get caught. They get help from their buddy Dallas who gets them some money and a train ticket.
