An essay about the consequences and side effects of social media

Is social media becoming a problem? That’s what many parents and experts are questioning. A study conducted by psychologist Larry Rosen found that there are many side effects to social media. Although it may be great for staying in touch with friends and family, there could be many negative health effects u may not know about. Larry Rosen has been studying psychology at Cal State Dominguez Hills, has done several studies surrounding how social networking affects us. Some of the things that he found were very surprising and eye opening.

He thinks that Teens who spend a lot of time playing video games or surfing the web, tend to have more headaches, anxiety, depression and sleeping problems. He also found that people who frequently checks Facebook tend to be more narcissistic. No matter what age you are, the more you use Facebook, the more likely you are to experience anxiety, paranoia and antisocial personality disorder. Rosen and his colleagues observed kids of all ages for 15 minutes before they studied for an exam. Majority of the kids were only able to focus on studying for 2 or 3 minutes, before turning their attention to their phone. The consequence of this was of course that the kids didn’t do as well on their exam as the kids who were more focused. This is just a few of the reasons why this is a huge problem among this generation. That’s why parents should always be aware of how much time their kids are spending on the internet. It’s always a good idea to discuss with your kids what they are doing and how they behave on the internet. They need to be involved with their kids without judging them be in touch with them. We have also seen a rise in the popularity of cyberbullying, which is also a big problem. Unlike other forms of bullying, cyberbullying can happen anywhere and anytime, for example if you took for example school bullying which can only take place at school. This can be a crueler way of bullying as the things said to them don’t go away and often is said in front of larger audiences which can compile the amount of stress and anxiety kids feel. Although there is a great deal of side effects of social media, it’s not all negative. Rosen thinks that social media encourages communication, kids can learn to share personal experiences and interact with other kids which can be a big plus for more introvert kids and help them open up to other kids.
