Nowadays a lot of young people take gap-years. Some take it because they’re tired of school and others because they want to experience the world or maybe want to work.
Many companies have seen this as an opportunity to recruit youngsters. They offer to pay for university, they give them travel money for their gap-year and give them annual study bursaries when they study at university. Of course, hoping that the youngsters will work for them after graduation.
Taking a gap-year can both have advantages and disadvantages, both for young people, but it can also affect the companies.
One of the disadvantages for the students can be that they’re maybe too young to know what they want to do when they get recruited. They’re maybe going to make the wrong career choice and regret it afterward. As the article says, most students are not obligated to work at the company after their graduation, but nowadays it’s hard to get a job, so the youngsters may take the job nevertheless because it’s the easy choice.
Also, if young people want to take another gap-year, it’s not possible for them. They would probably lose their scholarship because the company would have to wait another year for them to graduate.
