Hello everybody here in Liverpool. I’m glad that the mayor of Liverpool invited me here, to give a speech at this conference “surveillance - what is it good for?”. As you saw on the flyer, I’m a politically active student. I’m studying my last year at a high school in Denmark. My major subjects are math, international business and marketing. The city I live in is called Aarhus, and I live there in a apartment with my boyfriend. As told, I’m politically active. I participate in different kind of demonstrations and protests, such as general election, environmental and privacy rights.
Today I’m going to talk about pros and cons of surveillance cameras in public, governmental surveillance and internet surveillance.
There are arguments for and against surveillance cameras in public. First, I want to talk about a research, made of Reolink. Reolink is a company who make security cameras. The research tells us that 58 percent of the people who participated, they do not find the surveillance cameras in public places as an invasion of their privacy. The last 42 percent says that it is an invasion of their privacy. Know how can there be such a big difference? I do not think that there is a real answer for that. Everybody has their own opinion and they their right to it. But still how can there be such a big difference between feeling the invasion of your life? I mean I do not think about all the cameras in the stores or on the streets when I walk around. I do not know ham many cameras there is out there. Maybe I do not want to know. What we don’t know won’t hurt us, right? If we don’t know how many cameras there is or where they are, then we won’t think about it. On the other hand, we won’t be able to act normal I public, if we knew how many cameras there were and where they were placed. I mean on one hand we citizens feel like someone is not telling the truth about the surveillance in public and on the other hand we don’t want to know, because we fear the worst. The company Reolink have made a list of pros and con of surveillance cameras in public spaces. They have made five pros and three cons. Mostly the pros tell something about helping to catch criminals and reducing the crime rate. The cons are mostly how people doubt effectiveness and the abusing.
