Everyone likes a good crime story and we can all agree, that crime is a pig part of our society. Without crimes, life would be too easy. Law enforcements all around the world work hard to make our society safe. Working with the law is a hard task, and it can affect the individuals mental health. Mentally damaged policemen can be very dangerous for people around them, and this problem has had an increasing number in the past few years. In the crime story “Hostage” written by Andrew Vachss in 1989, this is one of the main themes, because the main character Walker, is a mentally damaged hostage negotiator.

“Hostage” begins in medias res, where the main conflict gets introduced “I’ve got a gun! Aimed right at her head. See? Take a look for yourselves. You make one move to come in here, I’ll blow her away!” (page 156, line 1-3). The opening sentence makes the reader very curious about what will happen further on in the story.

After a short description of the Brooklyn setting, the main character “Walker” gets introduced (page 156, line 12)

Characterization of Walker

The characterization of Walker is revealed through indirect characterization. We get introduced to things that reveal the personality of Walker and he pretty much explains his own personality through the story. There are 5 different methods of indirect characterization. It goes by the acronym STEAL.
