What happens when you feel like you do not get treated right by your own mother? When she affects a person’s life through favoritism and special treatments for someone who should be treated just as equal with you? When one child gets favored over another, it is usually based on problems among the family that affects the family’s behavior to their children, whereas sometimes they do not even notice the numerous construction they have against their child. This is the main theme of the short story “streamlining” by Muli Amaye. The mother does not think about the consequences for her daughter by favoring her son in the story.
The short story is about two siblings, Jocie, and her brother Brandon. Jocie is driving with her brother to their mother’s house in Reddish where Jocie in the car keeps pointing out her frustrations about how Brandon behaves. She thinks he is very irresponsible and that he behaves far from being one on thirty-one. Jocie very much believes that her mother favors Brandon. She makes apologies for his bad behavior by blaming others and comes up with his excuses for why he is not the one doing bad things. Jocie gets blamed for most things in the family, including the fathers depart from the family. Jocie is anxious about visiting her mother, because she is very aware about who she favors and that is also the case when they arrive. When Jocie and her brother arrives some fruit from the shopping bags had dropped out, her mother was certainly not satisfied and got mad at her, so she says goodbye to her mother and brother, and then leaves.
