“The Aliens” is a short story. A short story is a fictional story, which means that it is not a true story. It is possible that the story found inspiration in a true story, but it will still be a made-up story overall. It obviously can be a completely made up story with nothing connected to reality. And as the name expresses it is of course a short story opposite to for an example a novel.
“The Aliens” is written by the short story writer, screenwriter and novelist Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, original name Ruth Prawer. She is best known for her accurate and deep portrayals of contemporary Indian lives and has won several prizes, including two Oscars for her adaptations of EM Forster’s novels “A room with a view” and “Howards End” and a Booker Prize for her novel “Heat and Dust”. In the short story “The Aliens” Ruth Prawer Jhabvala presents the story about the European woman named Peggy from England. Peggy is married to Dev, a rich businessman from India. Peggy met Dev in England where he had gone to study a couple of years ago. Back then he was a good boy - a nice steady type. Almost like a typical boy from England. He was very shy so she always had to take the initiative, but afterwards they figured out that they had many things in common despite the difference in their nationality. They fell in love and got married with the blessings of Peggy’s family. Now Peggy and Dev live in India with Dev’s large and noisy family, which consists of his mother, sister and her sister’s husband. Living in India means that Peggy is now facing the many challenges that comes along when trying to adapt to a completely new and different culture from her own. She must learn many things such as being looked down on because of her slim body, pale skin and choice of clothes, which are considered a drawback in India. Learn to eat hot, oily and spicy food, even though it makes her eyes water and nose run and learn to live in the heat under the sun.
