In this analytical essay, I will analyze the short story Machine Man written by Marlish Glorie, where I will focus on characterization, narrative and point of view, theme and message.
Historically it is about the 19-year-old boy Paul, who is called Machine Man by Black Jack because he has a lot of piercings. The story takes place in a short period of time. It's a first-person narrator, so we get his thoughts and worldview. Paul does not live in a house or apartment like normal people, he lives in a caravan. The caravan owns his chef Black Jack. He works in the yard of a car wrecker, where he keeps an eye on the place and feeds the dogs. Paul has a lot of piercings and his hair is dyed orange. Paul behaves like his family is a tv. '' Sometimes I´ve even thought about changing my surname to TV. Paul TV, that's me. '' (P.1 l.14) He is very lonely, except when working with Black Jack and Nut. Blackjack is sweet to Paul because he has let Paul live in the caravan for free and hired him. According to Paul, Jack is his best friend. Paul wants his relationship with his mother to be loving and caring. It causes his childhood to be forgotten. Paul often thinks twice, and he thinks a lot about what people think of him. He is very introverted, and he probably has some kind of mental illness. He often defends his actions in his head, no matter how wrong they are. He is not thinking at all about actually choosing and kidnapping an old lady.
