The texts name is “Machine Man” written in 2016 by Marlish Glorie. The genre of this text is a short story. The story won the Inaugural Brother-hood of Saint Laurence Hope Prize 2016 and Newcastle short story award.
In the short story, Machine Man, it is the narrator, Paul, who is telling the story, and all through the story, we follow his point of view, and that is also why it is a first-person narrator. Paul is 19 years old and he’s working at a car wrecker’s yard, where he lives in a caravan that his boss has lived in, so there are all the necessary things for living there. Paul had been living in the caravan since he was 15, and he had gone to school as a kid, but he can’t read or write. The narrators caravan is placed by the side of the office, and behind the office there’s a toilet and a bath. Paul does not pay rent for living there, in return it’s necessary that he feeds the guard dogs, and keeps an eye open at night and in weekends, when the car wrecker’s yard is closed. Some people might think he is stupid, because he sometimes speaks to his microwave. The boss and the other worker at the yard thinks he is cool, but they are also making a lot of fun of him. An example from the text could be, when the boss, Black Jack, tells Paul that is ancestors easily could have been gadgets because of all the metal piercings he is wearing on his body and face, and the only thing he needs is bolts either side of his neck and he would look like Frankenstein. (from line 20-23).
