Hello ladies and gentlemen. My name [NAVN A] and I am a Danish exchange student here at the John Hopkins University and I am here to talk to you about the American dream and how it has changed over the years. I have always thought that the American dream was the words written on the front of the declaration of independence “Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” but one thing I have learned about while I was studying here at the John Hopkins University is that the American dream isn’t one specific idea.
Whilst I was doing research on the American dream one trend, I observed was that people on the political right, the republicans here in the America, still whole heartedly believe in the American dream and thought that the American dream was those words written on the declaration of independence which are “Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” but on the political left there tends to be resentment towards the American dream labeling it as made up and non-obtainable.
One of the reasons I believe why republicans are fonder of the American dream is because they are mostly low payed manual labor workers and when they see someone like the current president of the united states who is a very successful and rich man but is also a republican. I believe that fuels them to work harder and try to obtain their goals. A lot of republican voters are also older, so they have been taught more traditional values like liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
