This analysis examines F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel 'The Great Gatsby', focusing on the evolution and corruption of the American Dream. It discusses Jay Gatsby's pursuit of wealth and social status, the impact of the 1920s economic boom, and the stark class divisions between 'new money' and 'old money'. F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote The Great Gatsby in the period of 1896-1925 and it was published in 1925. The Great Gatsby is a novel about the American Dream, and how it affects different people in the 1920’s.

The ideal of the American Dream is based on the fantasy that an individual can achieve success regardless of family history, race, or religion simply by working hard enough. It is about moral values and the pursuit of happiness. It started out as a pursuit of happiness but it took a turn in the 1920’s where it turned into a pursuit of wealth, money, houses and social acceptance which meant that there was a larger focus on more materialistic values. This change made Gatsby corrupt and it caused him to become greedy and pursue wealth and illegal deeds. What Gatsby pursued was Daisy, but the only way he could get her was if he was rich.

Jay Gatsby’s real name was James Gatz. By doing this he attempted to recreate his new identity by changing his name from James Gatz to Jay Gatsby he achieved just that. Gatsby wished to be reborn as an aristocrat, because of his thoughts on being in a higher social class would enhance his chances with Daisy. He was born in North Dakota in a farmer family. Later in his life he meets Dan Cody, who was a self-made millionaire and represented a lot of the same morals and values that Gatsby wants. Gatsby saw a clear resemblance between himself and Dan Cody, which made it easy for him to make Cody achievements into Gatsby’s own personal goals to achieve the same as him. Dan Cody then made Gatsby his personal assistant. Dan Cody died because of his alcohol abuse. Gatsby then inherited 25.000 dollars but because of the wife of Dan Cody. Gatsby was unable to claim it.
