US immigration: The American Dream and its challenges

The hunt for the American Dream is increasing because of the values. Several immigrants apply for a green card with the hopeful idea that they can start from “the bottom”, work hard, eventually fulfil their dreams and maybe become rich. Immigration is a controversial topic in the United States like all over the world. Illegal immigrants are particularly a divisive topic in US because of the large number. About 11 millions are illegal residing in US because they have crossed the border without documentation to stay. Others entered the country legally but overstayed the number of days permitted on their visa.

The government and most of US citizens have a powerful view on this hotly debated topic, but the views are different dependent on the individual person.

In connection with immigration in US, a lot of them become a part of the labour market. They contribute manpower which is in favour of the American society. The immigrants help to improve the Gross Domestic Product as long as they pay taxes to the public sector. A big social problem is that the immigrants try to evade the tax. Some of these people have tendency to do cash-in-hand job because they are used to take care of their own money and don’t pay taxes. Some corrupt employers often underpay the immigrants, but the immigrants don’t say anything in fear of deportation. Moonlighting affects all US citizens because of missing income taxes to make a better welfare in US. It isn’t the only problem! Few American employers smuggle young girls and women into the country. The employers know that they have to earn money and at the same time many of the immigrants stay out of trouble. The employers often take advantage of the immigrants’ financial situation which often results in sneaky offers. The victims normally accept these in hope that can get out of poverty. Suddenly their joyful future plans turn around. They discover they are brought into US for the purpose of prostitution. It’s illegal in US and frequently they also commit another offence. It’s namely a general problem that the American employers benefit by undocumented people on account of their missing knowledge about the lowest wage rate.
