Maintaining a strong bond between siblings is, at times, a very tricky business to handle as a parent, but the disagreements and quarrels can be a means through which parents can help their children form positive connections between each other. Relationships are built on trust, and when that foundation is taken away, the “tower of trust” is torn down, and the feeling of betrayal and anger is all there’s left. "The Dress" by Julia Darling, focuses on the effects of broken trust between siblings, on both parents and kids.
“The Dress,” tells the story of how Rachel, the sister of Flora, buys a beautiful dress to wear
on her mother's 40th birthday. In a moment of weakness Flora steals the dress, she is, at that time unaware of the consequences that will follow. Later, we hear of how Flora, prior to the birthday, went out with her Italian friend, Alberto, where she spilled her drink all over Rachel’s dress, consumed by guilt Flora then ended up burying the ruined dress. At their mother’s birthday gathering, which is at an expensive restaurant, Rachel and Flora attempt to act as if nothing has happened, but that doesn't last very long, and both girls end up leaving, abandoning their mother on her birthday.
