The podcast is called “Why Is It Important To Be Touched?” and it is by David Linden. David Linden is a professor of neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. David does researches on how our brain processes all of the five senses. In the podcast he discusses the importance of being touched. He says that out of all of our senses touch gets the least attention. He compares some of our senses to the touching senses. He tells us that if we were born without one of our other senses, we can develop a great mind and a great body and have a great life but that the lack of being touched could cause us problems.

In the podcast David Linden has a conversation with the host Gay Raz. Linden tells us about his research on how the lack of stimulation of our senses can affect us. He refers to facts about how the brain works and refers to other researches to support those facts. He talks about the scandal in Romania in the 1970-1980s were children at the orphanages. The children at the orphanages were under stimulated on their touching sense. They were under stimulated because of the lack of touch and caring. It effected the children in both a psychological and physical way. The children’s growth was stunted, and they had other problems such as problems with the development of their gastrointestinal systems and their immune systems. Linden knows this according to an incident where volunteers came in and gave just 30 minutes a day of loving touch, a little hugging and a little limb manipulation. According to Lindens sources it was enough to completely reverse all of the deleterious effects but only if it occurred in the first two years of the child’s life. Linden also tells us that if this intervention came any time after the age of 2 then it wouldn’t help and then all those problems would persist for the rest of the child’s life.
