A dream itself is but a shadow. Dreams whether come true or do not come true. when dreams don’t come true, you feel stuck. Nothing to achieve and complete. You’re being passive rather than proactive, you desperately want to fit in, and you’re realizing you have been going on circles and doing the same thing over and over. You’re stuck. When you’re realizing that you’re in a miserable space of lack, and no matter what you do, you have to carry this knotted heaviness inside wherever you go. You want to escape, but you are afraid of destroying what you already build so far. In the story “Eastmouth” we get to know Sonia and her dream about moving out to the city.
Sonia has a boyfriend named Peter, she met at her university. They’re both graduated and just moved to Peters hometown, Eastmouth. Sonia does not like quiet and empty places, because she is a city girl,” She is used to the midlands and to city life.” ‘p. 2, l. 10’. Sonia doesn’t like Peter’s hometown Eastmouth, she feels unfit and trapped. Apart from feeling trapped, she has different dreams as well. She wishes a different life, a life in Las Vegas where she can work and earn money, “If I get the job, I’ll save up for a while and then I want to go to Las Vegas.” ‘p. 3, l. 37’. Sonia talks very negative about Eastmouth, and the resort reminds her of her childhood. She is dressed for a hot weather “Sonia, in a thin, brightly coloured jacket, dressed for warmer weather.” ‘p. 2, l. 12’. We get a sensation that, in Sonia’s perspective is Eastmouth a very traditional city, everything is very old, and it haven’t changed for years. Peter and his family won’t let Sonia go out alone, “I’ll come with you”, and “” Sonia” she turns around and finds Peters parents standing behind her.” ‘p.4, l. 108’. Sonia has a strange relationship with Peter’s parents. Peter’s mother tries to make Sonia love Eastmouth, even though Peter’s mother know that Sonia doesn’t like Eastmouth because she talked about moving out to Las Vegas.
