These days we have to take special care of ourselves and each other. A virus called COVID-19 has come into the world and has created both good and bad challenges. One of the biggest issues is the fact that many people are feeling lonelier than ever. Many studies show that loneliness in people has increased very much during the Corona pandemic. That’s probably because people are forced to stay home and not see many people. Social relations are important for people and affect their quality of life. Loneliness is a feeling that arises when a person doesn’t get his social requirement. Loneliness occurs in people who miss contact and being with those they feel connected to. Loneliness can also lie in the fact that you don’t have a well-functioning family where you feel seen. The family gives a sense of a foundation and belonging. Without the family, can you have the feeling that you don’t have anyone to lean on or turn to for help.
Neil Gaiman’s novel “Coraline” presents the subject of loneliness, because of the relationship between the 11-year-old girl Coraline and her parents. Coraline is a very curious, quiet and intelligent girl, who loves to explore. But she feels very lonely, because in the novel both of her parents are very absent and work very much, so Coraline has a lot of time to herself. It seems that her parents aren’t paying much attention to her and they seem emotionally distant from their daughter. “And leave me alone to work” (P.9), this sentence describes the relationship between Coraline and her father very well. Coraline seeks attention from her father, and as reader we want to go in and replace their relationship. But one day Coraline finds a mysterious door, that leads into another world that is similar to the real one, and she finds her “other parents”. The “other parents” are giving Coraline the attention she wishes from her real parents. They are sweet and attentive to Coraline and do a lot to persuade her to stay in the “other world”. But she quickly gets a suspicious impression of her “other parents”.
