Analytical essay of ” May the best man win” – Kit de Waal

The short story is an analysis of “May the Best Man Win” written by Kit de Waal. The novelle begins in medias res with the arrival of four men at a pub, it takes place in a pub called The Carpenter’s Arms in Birmingham in England. The events described in the story take place during a boxing fight, in the year 1981. Kit de Waal also known as Mandy Theresa O´Loughlin was born in 1960 in Birmingham herself. And also recalled:

“We were the only black children at the Irish community Centre and the only ones with a white mother at the West Indian Social club.”

This is probably where she reflects a bit of her life into the story.

The whole story’s action takes place in a pub. The pub in normally visited by the same people every day, so everyone knows each other. It was easy to discover who was new based on where they entered. If you entered by the backdoor like the usuals, people knew you came there often or just was known in the place. Then there was the front entrance where only new people to the place would come in trough. These unknown people were most likely not happy welcomed. The main characters are Patti, the bartender at this pub. And the king, who was a new visitor. In the story Patti and the king flirts a lot throughout the evening/night. It seems that they like each other a lot. The place is a pub in Birmingham, in England. The story takes place at a night in December 1981. Its very visible that there is a clear racial conflict in especially the start.
