The civil rights movement was an organized by Black Americans to end racial discrimination and gain equal rights under the law. It began in the late 1940s and ended in the late 1960s. They wanted to achieve social justice and to be acknowledged, as well of getting rid of laws introduced by powerful white men; black people were not to use the same public facilities as white people, live in many of the same towns or go to the same schools. Interracial marriage was illegal, and most Black people couldn’t vote because they were unable to pass voter literacy tests.
During the movement, African Americans took upon some very strong leadership roles in order to come off as strong as possible. In the time period of 20 years, many sacrifices where made and many people needed to be brave. It took many events in order to give black people the same rights as whites and to achieve social justice.
The Jim Crow Laws were implemented to ensure the segregation between African Americans and white individuals. A racial caste system which operated primarily, but not exclusively in southern and border states, between 1877 and the mid-1960s. The laws were a way of life, that were followed by the same belief; that whites were superior to blacks in all ways. For example, where black people not allowed to enter the same toilets, changing rooms etc. As whites. They were not allowed to call white people by their first names, only “Master”, “Mr.” or “Mrs.”, and giving their hand to a white woman was seen as rape. As well as this, where they not allowed to public affection towards anyone, as this was seen as disrespectful.
