Good day ladies and gentlemen. I am blessed that such a big amount of people has prioritized being at such a relevant event as the Oxford Schools Regional Debate Competition. My name is [NAVN A], and I am a member of the debate team at Oxford University. It is me an honor to represent the topic “Poverty in the UK”, which is a disputed huge problem in the UK both in terms of the present time, and the future.Introductory, I will account for the increasing poverty in the UK. Secondly, I will discuss the different attitudes towards poverty. Finally, am I going to talk about the possible consequences of the current austerity policies. If anyone have some questions regarding the topic, I will allow 5-10 minutes at the end of my presentation, and I would be grateful if you would wait until then and I will be happy to answer.Let’s begin.

As some of you probably know 67 million people lives in the UK. How many of those do you think are poor. 500 thousand people? 1 million? Perhaps 3 million people? Well, you’re wrong! There are approximately 14 million people, who daily, live in poverty. It is chocking right? It is almost Denmarks population multiplied by 3. Poverty can be defined as a household income 60 percent below the average household income. It can be hard to vote what the negative development is caused. Since 2010 the politicians have been making cuts in welfare support, meaning that a disturbing level of people lives in hunger. The number of people living in poverty is rising at an alarming rate, which results in tens of thousands of families that don’t have enough money to buy groceries, to provide themselves and their families. This is where daycares and kindergartens raise alarm bells about children arriving at school hungry. The poverty in the United Kingdom has progressed to a point where some families are forced to choose between having a single hot meal per day or having the heat turned on at night. With this, I am not discussing the living circumstances in a poor nation like Africa for whom we raise funds once a year, but the UK.
