(Serial) killers including Ted Bundy, John Wayne, the Boston Strangler and Luka Rocco Magnotta harmed animals when they were children and leading up to the killings. It’s a very popular belief, that people who abuse animals are more likely to kill than the average person. But why does animal abuse lead up to committing violent crimes?

The Macdonald Triad... The triad was proposed by psychiatrist John Macdonald in the 1960’s.

The Macdonald Triad consists of three individual factors in sadistic patients. Animal abuse, obsession with fire starting and wetting the bed past a certain age, can link to homicidal and sexually predatory behavior. There were obviously many flaws with the Macdonald Triad, because not all children who are obsessed with fire starting and wetting the bed will go to hurt people. But it is more common, that people who participate in animal abuse will go to commit violent crimes in adulthood.

Alan Brantly believed that some people kill animals as a practice for killing humans. Animal abuse is also used to vent frustration and anger. During the offender’s childhood they could not retaliate towards those who caused them utter humiliation, so they chose animals as their victims since they are viewed as vulnerable and weak. Some offenders even use the same method of killing animals as their human victims.
