I think this topic is interesting because it is a difficult topic to talk about, and most people want to avoid the thought of the terrifying things that had happened to the victims.
Relevant
Even though some of the crimes happened years ago, we still talk about the crimes in school etc. and we use it to understand why some people would do such horribly things to other people and it decreases the curiosity from the younger generation.
Society problem
It is luckily not a big society problem anymore as it used to be. In 1987 there were 198 killed, but only 2 in 2019

Childhood trauma
Most of the acts of a serial killer comes from childhood trauma. It’s mostly caused by abuse from the parents, self-abuse, sexual abuse or physic and physiological abuse. It would lead to antisociality, when they as kids didn’t get the love they deserved from their parents. That would make it harder for serial killers to express their feelings and they appear emotionless. In that way, it’s easier for them to kill without feeling guilty.
It could also be the environment that the kids grow up in.
