The easiest way to deal with anger, is to distance yourself from your friends and family. In Eminem’s song “Stan”, we get to know a guy called Stan, who is trying to become friends with his rap icon Eminem. Whilst he is telling about his relationship, the past, and his feelings and thoughts.
“I never knew my father neither. He used to always cheat on my mom and beat her (…) She doesn’t know what it was like for people like us growing up”
Stan tells Slim Shady, about some very personal issues, from his youth, where his father would abuse his mother. Stan’s girlfriend doesn’t know about his past, and can’t relate to it, which may be true, but it seems like a weird thing to tell someone you would impress. Since Eminem had a
similar childhood, Stan talks about it, wishing Slim Shady will understand him.
Sadly, Stan forgets how Eminem probably gets hundreds of fans letters every day, not having time to respond. This leaves Stan feeling neglected and alone, which results in even more anger, that he can’t deal, with because he can’t separate fiction from reality. In this case, it is the made-up alter ego, Slim Shady and the real rapper Eminem. Stan is putting so all his hopes and expectations onto Slim Shady shoulders, but this just results in his feeling even worse, since this rap music is his only therapy normally.
