“Success is my only motherfucking option, failures not”. This quote is from Eminem´s song, and the question is now - is it possible to be successful by hard-working and taking chances no matter where you are from and your background? Marshall Bruce Mathers, better known as Eminem, was brought up in a poor neighborhood, without his father, who abandoned him when he was only a few months old. Music was his way out and in no time, he fell in love with rap. In the following paper I will analyze and interpret the song" lose yourself” with a focus on how Eminem describes his version of the American dream.

“Lose yourself” is a song written by the American rapper Eminem. The song was released as a single in 2002 and is from the movie “8 mile”. The song contains lyrics about the life of the character Jimmy “B-Rabbit” Smith Jr. - played by Eminem. “Lose yourself” is a narrative poem because Eminem tells a story throughout the whole song. Eminem writes about taking chances that life presents to you. He tells the story of the film protagonist, Jimmy, but in the final verse, Jimmy´s and Eminem´s real life are drawn close together. The composition of the song consists of three verses, an intro, and a chorus, which is repeated 3 times. He starts the song with “look” and then a question “Look if you had one shot or one…. just let it slip?” He is addressing directly to the listener, and it creates a personal relationship between Eminem and the listener.
