If you ask most people in the world what they mean by "the American Dream", almost everyone will refer to some version of upward mobility or American success stories. Perhaps they will refer to the symbolic house with its white picket fence, suggesting economic self-sufficiency and security; many will associate the term with a country with opportunities for immigrants. The Oxford English Dictionary defines the American Dream as “the ideal that every citizen of the United States should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative”. But “the American Dream”, is far from achieved.
Studies show that of America’s 325 million inhabitants, 40 million live in poverty. And the trends look disturbing, to say the least: not only do Americans live shorter lives on average than in the past, but their lives are also far more fraught with diseases than in the past. Based on the life of the famous rapper Eminem, you can see that it can still be difficult. Many may think he has had it easy and live the life everyone is dreaming of living, but it has certainly not been easy for Eminem to get to where he is today. He absolutely came from the rags to the riches.
