“AWOL” is a short film directed by Deb Shoval in 2010. It is about a girl who wants to run away to Canada with her lover.
The story is about a girl called Joey who has just come back from an army boot camp. She is staying with her parents for a few days before she must go to Afghanistan. She is in love with a girl named Rayna who is the mother of two small girls and lives in the neighborhood. Joey wants to run away to Canada and asks Rayna to come along, and after a while she says yes. Joey then borrows some money from her stepdad and goes to Rayna’s house. Rayna is sitting with her husband and tells Joey that she has made a care package for her and shows her that she doesn’t want to go to Canada anyway. Joey ends up going to Afghanistan.

The setting is a small place somewhere in the U.S.A. The story takes place around Christmas time, and it’s shown by the snowy weather, and at one point we can also see a Christmas tree inside the house. We can see that they are a lower middleclass family by the way they live. It is also clear that 100 dollars is a lot when Joey asks her stepdad for money. The family is not well connected with each other, Joey only feels good when she is with her lover. The setting shows us how Joey does not feel accepted, and the military is her only option.
