A big part of England’s history is how they think of themselves as more important. This short film is about a girl that learns that a person’s cultural background is not everything and that you must live the consequences of your actions.
Summary
In the short film “Patriot” (2015) by Riley Eva, the film starts with Hanna singing the English patriotic song “Jerusalem”. After being excluded in her fathers meeting, she goes for a bike ride to a trailer park where she meets a gypsy boy and tells him to fuck off. They banter for some time and find out they have boxing in common and begin to have fun, until her brother finds her and threatens to tell their dad about her gypsy boyfriend. Hannah gets angry for getting her in trouble and starts hitting thing with a pipe, which ends up with a smashed window. The boy yells at her and in a panic, Hannah hits him with the pipe. Panicking that he is not moving she runs home, where her family are getting ready for a demonstration. They drive off singing “Jerusalem”, but Hannah is not singing along.
Analysis
The short film takes place in modern time England, which can be seen on the flags they have in the backyard and on the flag, Hannah uses as a cape, other than that it can be heard on their accent and the way their way of words indicates they area middle to lower-class family.
