Many people all over the world love sport and have a big passion for it. Sport is a big thing, whether it is football, golf, motorsports, or rugby. People love rooting for both team and country. Some of the most loyal fans will travel far and wide to watch their team play a match. This makes it very interesting for some corrupt governments and regimes, that can see a good opportunity for tourism, money, and most importantly positive public relations. But could sportswashing potentially ruin sport, and the good reputation it owns?

But before we can discuss sportswashing, we must understand what sportswashing is and how it is being used. Sportswashing is a term used, when a corrupt government, or regime uses sport for enhancing their reputation, and making money. Sportswashing has for an example been used in Russia at the 2018 World cup, where Russia got a lot of criticism for violent hooligans, conflicts in Ukraine and Syria, and planned attacks against opposing political and LGBT activist. But as soon as the games began the media turned their focus to football, and not the criticism. But sportswashing is not something new and has been around for long. In 1936, Hitler and his Nazi party hosted the Olympic games in Berlin just three years before starting World War 2. In more recent times sportswashing has been used more frequently. Countries such as Azerbaijan, Saudi Arabia, and Russia has used sportswashing, and most recently Qatar will host the world cup in the winter of 2022. Qatar has been heavily criticized for their lack of human rights, and the conditions that their immigrant workers are living under. Experts tells us that that the immigrant workers live under slave conditions, and many of them has died during the construction of the stadiums planned for using in the 2022 World Cup. In addition to all this, it has also been proved that Qatar has bribed FIFA to make sure that Qatar would host the 2022 World Cup.
