Braces (2016) By Nick Werber
The short story ”Braces” was written by Nick Werber in 2016. This story starts with Nick having his dentist grandfather check his teeth. Meanwhile, Nick’s father sitting in a living room next to the dental clinic. Over dinner, Nick feels pressure from two family members about his future. Nick tries to please both, but it ends up being too much for Nick, who decides to smoke a cigarette he had stolen from his father’s pocket, wondering what happened on Earth while he was trapped in Bogner. On the way home, Nick hears about an ultimatum between himself and his grandfather. His father was strapped for money, and grandfather was willing to pay for Nick's school if he chose science and got straight A's, but Nick was reluctant to make the choice to listen to music while dreaming about his distant beach dream in Australia.
