The story, Indian camp, is written by author Ernest Hemingway and was published 1924. The short story begins in medias res, when a young boy called Nick Adams rows across a lake with his father and his uncle George. They are on their way to a Native American camp or as mentioned in the story, an Indian camp. Nicks father is a doctor, and has been ordered out to the camp for a child delivery. The woman he will be helping, has been in labor for days.
As soon as they arrive to the camp, they hear the screams of a woman in pain. When they enter the place, they see the screaming woman lying in the bottom section of a bunkbed. Her husband lies on the upper bunk, with an injured foot and a cigar in his hand. It seems like, he is annoyed with the noise of his screaming wife. Nick is very uneasy about the situation, but his father explains to him that the woman is having a baby, he still looks away. His father is forced to perform a caesarean without any anesthetics but a jack-knife, and Nick as his assistant.
Nick tries to hold the woman still, but she bites after him. As the surgery is finalized, and the child is delivered, his father stiches her up. The woman is unconscious, pale, and unaware of anything going on. The doctor checks on the husband in the upper bunk, but as he pulled the blanket he discovers that the husband is dead. He had slid his throat from one ear to the other, with a razor, during the surgery. He asked Nick to leave the room, but I was too late, Nick had already seen everything. His uncle and two native Americans leaves the camp, not to return.
