‘Brides of the well’, takes place in a little village named Baramur. A land claimed over the years by the desert. The short story’s main character is called Saraswati, and we follow her and her friend Paras, as they are forced to live a life no young girl wishes.

The young girls of Baramur were forced into marriages with elderly men and forced to please their husbands in any way wished. The girls are given chores such as cleaning, fetching water, making food and other pleasuring.

On one trip down to the well, Saraswati and Paras, are only to find out that they care for the same boy. The boy who comes every six months with his father, to sell medicinal oils.

But the exasperation between the girls doesn’t last long, for the five-hour journey back home, is too long to walk alone. The girls walk back to the village together, hand in hand, two small shadows merging.

Analytical essay

The short story ‘Brides of the well’, is written by Shekhar Kapur, in 2011. It is a narrative of the caste system in India, showing us the repulsive structure, lower cast members must abide by. It shows the clear contrast, between being a part of the upper- and lower casts, and the Indians view on forced marriage
