'Brides of the Well', analyse af Shekhar Kapurs novelle

The story,” Brides of the Well” is written by Shekhar Kapur. It is a story about Indian girls living in India in this modern time. It is written in the year 2011. The story is about the big theme about the Indian Caste System, which divides the Indian people into groups of the society. The system is illegal in India, but there is still a noticeable difference between people in India (between the different castes). This essay will include setting, characterization, symbols, theme and message and perspective.

The story takes place in India, in small and poor villages. There are only few indications of time. One is for instance, that there are cars in the story which indicates, that the story is after the invention of cars. The story focuses on the caste system in India, which is a very big problem in India. It is better than it once was, but it is still difficult for a low caste family, to get an education and turn the bad circle. A lot of highly educated people are from the lowest cast, which means that it is possible to do good in life, even though you get a “bad start”. The indication that the environment is very poor is the fact, that these girls of the Baramur village must go a long distance only to bring water to their own village. And they do even have to marry guys from other villages, so that they can survive in their own village. This might seem to be something happening in the past, but this still happens in India today.
