“Red from green” is a short story told by a third person narrator. The point of view is from the main character Sam Turner.
Sam is a teenage girl. She has perfect teeth and is a little awkward. She gets suspicious when it comes to receiving complements: (p. 8 ll. 25) “She was awkward at fifteen, and praise made her suspicious.”
She has just turned fifteen and in the fall, she would be a sophomore. Sam has also been offering a scholarship to a boarding school, which is one of the better schools: (p. 8 ll. 8) “much better than the local schools” Sam must be clever since she has gotten accepted into the school.
Sam has a close relationship to her father, and it has gotten even closer after her mom died. Sam cares a lot about her father’s wellbeing, but they do not talk about feelings: (p. 8 ll. 8-9) “neither of them could bring themselves to talk about it.”
Even though it was her father’s idea for her to apply at the boarding school, he would look dismayed every time the subject would come up. Therefor Sam has not officially accepted the scholarship, she does not want to leave her father alone. It must have been just the two of them for a long time.
