The main theme in this short story is growing up. Growing up is never easy, you have to stand on your own feet’s, and take care of yourselves. In the short story is the main character Sam finds herself at the beginning of the difficult transformation from child to adult. On the trip down the river with her father, Sam was confronted with her sexuality, when an adult client of her uncle shows interest in her. She starts look at her father in a different way and see new sides of him, and the idyll you have with your parents when you are child is broke and their relationship changes. All the new experience gets her look at herself in a new light as well.
The main character Sam is an American teenager who is starting her senior year of high school. She lives alone with her father because her mother is dead and they have a special bond.
She wonders why her father stopped using his gun after the mother dead it comes clear in this quote
”She sometimes wondered if her father had quit hunting because he´d been busy taking care of her, or if he´d just stopped liking to shoot things” (p. 2, ll. 37-39).
