Tupac Amaru Shakur also known by his stage name 2Pac, and Makaveli was involved in a feud between East Coast and west Coast rappers and was murdered in a drive-by shooting in 1996 at the age of 25. Tupac was born in New York, his family moved homes often, sometimes stayed in shelters.
He began his music career as a rebel who wanted to express the hardships and injustices that many African Americans endured. His ability to do so made him a spokesperson not only for his own generation, but also for the generations that followed as they continued to fight the same battle for equality. He is considered a symbol of activism against inequality. Rap and hip hop music were the music of the poor black people. The lyrics often described the tough life in the “hood”: the suburbs of American cities, ghettos where drugs, murder and poverty dominated.
All of this is also represented in the text I chose to write about; Changes, by 2Pac. Changes is a classic hip hop song, with 3 chorus, 3 verses and one separate verse. In the bigger picture it is a statement of inequality, racism, gang violence and the corruption of the American welfare system. The song conveys a powerful message of peace and equality.
