In 1776, when the United States of America was founded, slavery was a legal institution
of human chattel slavery. This meant that an enslaved person was treated as property
and had to work for the owner, doing whatever they were asked to do. In the past,
many societies had slavery as an economic system, and the slaves could be bought or
sold without question. Slavery lasted in about half of the American states until 1865.
1. Harriet Tubman was born into slavery in 1822 in Maryland. Growing up, she turned
out to be a brave and independent woman. At the age of six, she started working as a
nursemaid at a white household, rocking the cradle as the baby slept. If the baby woke
up and started crying, Harriet would get whipped. She found ways to resist this by
wearing extra clothes as protection against the beatings. Later, when she was 12 years
old and working as a field slave on a plantation, she got the chance to run away.
